Signs That It’s Time To Update Your Headshot

One question we often get is, “How often should I be updating my headshot?” Or, “When do I need a new headshot?”

We want to address this question by giving you five signs that it is indeed time to book a headshot session:

1. Hair Change

Ladies, if you’ve colored your hair or if you’ve gone through a dramatic hair change—maybe last time you did your headshot your hair was very short and now it’s long, or vice versa—it’s time to update your headshot so that whatever you’re putting out there on your profile or your business card actually matches who you are when you show up in person. The same goes for the men: If you had long hair but now you have a shorter style, or maybe you decided to shave your head, or maybe you have more of a salt and pepper look now. Any kind of a hair change between what you look like now and what’s on your current headshot means it’s time to update your headshot.

2. Industry change

Maybe your headshot image no longer quite makes sense for what you’re doing. For instance, if you were a personal trainer and now you’re a banker, those are going to be two completely different outfits and feels that you’re going for. So if you switch industries, really think about whether your headshot still fit with the image you’re trying to portray in your new industry.

3. Weight loss

Many of our clients that we’ve done headshots for in the past are calling us back now because they had some significant weight loss, and you can really see it in their features and face. Again, their old headshot no longer matches up with how they look now. We want to capture the new you!

4. Glasses

We have some clients who got their headshots from us when they did not wear glasses, but now they do. And vice versa—some of our clients have gone through LASIK procedures, or they now wear contacts all the time. It makes sense to update your headshot to line up with how you look now on a daily basis.

5. Your old headshot looks dated

Are you one of those rare people who, when people see you, say “Wow! You haven’t changed in 10 years!” Maybe you look the same and you’re in the same industry, but maybe your headshot was done a long time ago and it looks dated. It’s got that old, gray backdrop, and just looks drab. You may want to update your headshot to a more modern, contemporary look. We can do that at your office, or in our studio. You don’t want old and dusty to be the image you present!

How Often You Should Update Your Headshot

For women, we recommend that you update your headshot twice a year. Often our female clients will want a different look in the fall and winter seasons than in the spring and summer time. So if you had a headshot with us in the spring, it’s time to update it again for the winter.

For men, we recommend that you update your headshot once a year. Men don’t usually want a seasonal change, but you do want to stay current with how you look because you want your image online to portray what you actually look like in person.
