It’s the time of year for family fall photos! Maybe you want updated pictures of your family or some new photos to use to update your walls, but fall photos are also great for Christmas cards. We know it’s hard to imagine, but Christmas is only a couple of months away! Now is the time to schedule your photos so your cards can be mailed to your friends and family.

We get lots of questions about fall photos, so we wanted to address them here to make the photo session a smooth process for you and your family.

1. What do you wear?

First of all, consider whether you want to have a theme in your pictures. Is everyone going to wear white? Black? Plaid? If you have a large family, you might consider splitting up the colors so that some of you are wearing solids and some are wearing prints, as this makes the photos look more cohesive. Also, consider the purpose of the pictures. Are these for your home? Your office? Your Christmas cards? If they’re specifically for Christmas cards, you might want to wear Christmas colors and have a specifically Christmas theme. If you’re not sure, talk to us and we can assist you with ideas.

2. Where do we take the pictures?

We do have a studio, and you are welcome to come here for your pictures. We do ask that if you have more than five people that we do the photo session outdoors, instead. It’s a lot less cramped outdoors, and it will give your photos a better feel. Here are our top 3 recommendations:

  • Frisco Heritage Museum if you’re going for that rustic feel.
  • Adriatica If you want more of a modern feel.
  • Downtown McKinney if you want a very hometown feel.

Of course, if you have a large backyard that looks great and you want your pictures taken there, we can absolutely do that as well. This is something that we can talk about and look at a couple of different locations to see what’s going to be the best fit for your family and what you’re trying to achieve.

3. What time of day/how long?

We typically recommend posing for your pictures in the late afternoon. This way you’ll get a richer sky close to sunset, and that brings out some dynamic colors! One thing that we do that most other photographers don’t is to bring additional lighting to give some unique looks to your pictures. Plan on an hour to an hour and a half for your shoot. We joke that the first 30 minutes to an hour is really just getting everyone to stop being rigid and stiff, and to start opening up and getting comfortable with us and with the whole process. Getting portraits made can be a daunting task! But once we get you comfortable and relaxed, we are able to capture great photos.

When we’re done we give you all the full-resolution digital image files, so that way you can use them again to print them out, use them on cards, whatever you like. They’re yours, and we don’t believe in holding those back from you!

We hope this helps with your fall photo sessions. We definitely want to help you and your family out, so don’t wait until it’s too late! Schedule your family photos today! Just click the link below and we’ll get you scheduled!
